Ontopia blir Open Source (Information in English below)
Hva er Ontopia?
Ontopia (www.ontopia.net) består av verktøy og applikasjoner for utvikling av semantiske systemer i Java. Ontopia driver semantiske systemer i Nokia Siemens Networks, Hitachi, det nederlandske skattekontoret, Bergen Kommune, Rikshospitalet, NRK mfl. Poenget er overlegen navigerbarhet og støtte for beslutningsprosesser i kunnskapsintensive portaler.
Historie
Produktet ble utviklet av selskapet Ontopia som ble startet i 2000. De tre gründerne Steve Pepper, Lars Marius Garshol og Geir Ove Grønmo var alle aktive i ISO –arbeidet for videreutvikling av Topic Maps- standarden for sikre produktet best mulig kvalitet. Lars Marius er fremdeles en av de mest sentrale i dette ISO-arbeidet. De første lisensene av produktet ble solgt i 2001. I dag er Ontopia i bruk på 4 kontinenter av en rekke store aktører som nevnt over.
Bouvet kjøpte Ontopia i 2007 etter å ha bygget opp Norges største kompetansemiljø rundt semantiske tjenester i IT-systemer. Oppkjøpet var begrunnet mest i å få tilgang til den kompetansen som var i selskapet. I dag har Bouvet over 50 konsulenter som jobber aktivt med bruk av semantiske teknologier hos våre kunder. Vi ser at denne andelen kommer til å øke i fremtiden.
Hvorfor Open Source? Og hvordan?
Bouvet ønsker å satse på Ontopia , og vi mener at å gjøre det til åpen kildekode er den beste måten å sørge for at produktet utvikler seg og at kundene blir fornøyde.
Det er fortsatt mange veivalg som skal tas. Selv om vi har tanker om f.eks forvaltning og lisensmodell, ønsker vi å invitere andre interessenter på en slik måte at Ontopia blir attraktivt for enda flere aktører. Derfor holder vi et planleggingsmøte 28. mai kl. 13.00. Vi mener at dette vil være med å sikre at vi får et aktivt community rundt prosjektet . Det vil også sørge for at våre eksisterende kunder får behovene sine ivaretatt på en god måte.
Dette ønsker vi at skal være på plass innen 2010:
- En aktiv community rundt Ontopia - med bidragsytere, kildekode og diskusjoner på et egnet nettsted (f.eks Google Code)
- At det blir tatt i bruk i enda flere prosjekter – med eller uten Bouvets medvirkning
- At vi har en lisens- og forvaltningsmodell som gjør det attraktivt å bruke/bidra til Ontopia for andre parter
- Et ikke-eksklusivt tilbud om profesjonell support til kunder
Plan
- April: Bouvet starter klargjøringen av kildekoden, og sørger for at det best mulig kan forvaltes i et community
- 28. mai: Konsoliderende møte: Hvordan sørge for best mulig forvaltning? Vi tar opp temaer som lisenstype, forvaltningsregime, funding, etc. Vi er veldig åpne for forslag.
- Q3/Q4: Code Camps der community produserer de endringene som markedet etterspør
- Q4: Ontopia er under aktiv forvaltning (kildekoden vil bli tilgjengeliggjort før første Code Camp)

Ontopia goes Open Source
Bouvet is a consulting company focusing in the Nordic market, and so selling a software product internationally has proved to be challenging to accommodate within the organization. Bouvet wants to continue to develop the OKS and to sell services based on the product. In our opinion the best way to do that, and to ensure that existing customers are satisfied, is to turn the OKS into an open source project, which we will call Ontopia.
There are still many decisions left to be made, and while we do have ideas for how to administer and license the software, we wish to invite other interested parties to give us their input, to help ensure that the Ontopia project is interesting for as many parties as possible. For this reason we will host a planning meeting on May 28th in Oslo. The intention is that this will enable an active community to develop around the project. It will also help ensure that existing customers have their needs met.
Bouvet will honor all support and maintenance contracts currently in effect, and we aim to continue selling such contracts. However, the specific terms of the new contracts will need to change to some degree as the project goes open source. More information on this will follow after the planning meeting.
W aim to achieve the following by 2010:

Having an active community around the Ontopia project, consisting of developers, users, and discussions on the project web site

That Ontopia is used in even more projects (whether run by Bouvet or not)

Having a licensing and administration model which makes it attractive for other parties to use and contribute to Ontopia

Having an offer of professional support on the product to both Bouvet customers and others
Plan:

April-May: Bouvet to prepare the source code and project web site

May 28th: Planning Meeting (consolidating meeting) where Bouvet meets interested parties to discuss how to achieve the best possible administration of the project. We will discuss issues like licensing, project administration, funding, etc. Suggestions and participation highly welcome!

July 1st: Project is launched; source code is made available

Q3/Q4: Code Camps where the community works on the software to fix bugs and add new requested features
